Fall Skincare Routine

Hey hey, and officially “happy fall!” Temperatures in southern Virginia are still hovering around 90 degrees and this girl is really hoping it dips off soon. Last week, we were teased with temperatures in the mid-to-lower 70’s, and I want that back! This past weekend I went shopping with a few gift cards I had lying around, and purchased a couple sweaters for the upcoming season. Now the weather just needs to cooperate so I can wear them!

Alright, on to what today’s post is actually about. Unless you want me to continue complaining about the lack of “fall breeze.” Ha! Today, I’m going into the details on my fall skincare routine. It doesn’t change a whole lot from summer, but I have never actually given you guys a run-down of what I do as far as skincare goes. If anything, I just lather on a bit more lotion and I probably use my Vitamin C oil more frequently. But, here’s a breakdown of my non-toxic fall skincare routine!

Morning Skincare Routine

I do not wash my face in the morning. Let me repeat, I am a one-time-a-day face washer, and some people may think that’s a bit weird, but I wanted to lay it all out there. I used to wash my face multiple times a day, but eventually I found that it was causing my skin to overproduce oil. I discovered this around the same time that I stopped washing my hair every day. And this is the point where some people just think I have poor hygiene. Ha! During my morning shower, I do splash water on my face. Does that count?

After I get out of the shower, I use Thayer’s Unscented Alcohol-Free Witch Haze. I apply this to a cotton round and gently swipe it across my face. This gets any traces of dirt off and it just “wakes up” my skin.

Following my toner application, I apply Beautycounter’s Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion. Now, this is a very well-loved bottle. However, I have been using this same one since I purchased it in March, and sometimes use it multiple times a day (after the gym, in particular). When you look at it that way, it has lasted me forever!

And that, my friends, is all I do for my skincare in the morning. I try to keep things pretty simple, because nobody wants to be doing an excessive skincare routine when they are barely awake.

Night Skincare Routine

This is the time of day that I thoroughly cleanse my face! Currently, I am just using Cetaphil face wash, but when that is out, I plan on switching to a non-toxic cleansing product. If I did not workout after work, then I just wash my face with that cleanser and water. If I did workout and I take a full shower, I use my Clarisonic Mia with the same cleanser. I tend to use this approximately 3-4 days a week, and find that it’s great for exfoliating!

Following my face wash, I use the toner/cotton round to prepare my skin for other products.

Now, depending on the day and how my skin feels, I may have an extra step in between my toner and moisturizer. Sunday nights, I tend to use a charcoal face mask from Beautycounter! I love using it as a little self-care to end my weekend and get prepared for the week ahead. Plus, “detoxifying” my skin makes me feel like I’m starting off my week on top of my game. Ha!

A couple times a week, I apply Beautycounter’s Overnight Resurfacing Peel. This is fantastic for evening out skin tone and smoothing skin’s texture. If you got a little too much sun this summer, start implementing this into your fall skincare routine! I do not use this on the same night that I apply the charcoal mask.

Most nights, I just apply Countermatch Recovery Sleep Cream, which is a heavier formula compared to my daytime moisturizer. If you find that your skin dries out with the changes in season, you may want to use this during the day as well.

The one big change I usually make in the fall/winter, is the addition of an oil. As it starts to get cooler, I will re-introduce Beautycounter’s Vitamin C Facial Oil. During the summer, I find that this makes my skin feel too greasy, but the trick to avoid that is to apply it at night! Also, the order in which you apply skincare is super important for absorption!

Here’s a breakdown of the proper order: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, oil. Lightest to heaviest. If you use an oil before a serum or moisturizer, the second product will not be able to get through into your skin.

Last step- eye cream! This isn’t something that you need, but my undereye bags could use a little work. I am currently using the Countertime Eye Cream, and while I really love the formula, I don’t think it’s doing much for my dark circles. Ha! Maybe I would be better off getting a bit more sleep during the week.

Okay, here’s a quick breakdown of my product usage:

Morning– Toner, Moisturizer

Evening– Cleanser, Toner, Mask or Serum, Moisturizer, Occasionally Vitamin C Oil, Eye Cream.
